George Timothy Clooney, born on May 6, 1961, is an accomplished American actor and filmmaker. Initially making a name for himself in television, Clooney gained widespread acclaim for his portrayal of Dr. Doug Ross in the NBC medical drama ER from 1994 to 1999, earning him two Primetime Emmy Award nominations. He then transitioned to leading roles in films, with notable performances in movies such as “From Dusk till Dawn” (1996), “Batman & Robin” (1997), “Out of Sight” (1998), “Three Kings” (1999), “The Perfect Storm” (2000), and “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” (2000). However, it was his role in Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s film series from 2001 to 2007 that propelled him to even greater stardom.

Clooney also ventured into directing, making his debut with the spy drama “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” (2002). He has since directed notable films such as the historical drama “Good Night, and Good Luck” (2005), the political drama “The Ides of March” (2011).

Clooney won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the thriller “Syriana” (2005). He has also received Best Actor nominations for his performances in the legal thriller “Michael Clayton” (2007), and the comedy-dramas “Up in the Air” (2009) and “The Descendants” (2011). In 1978, George Clooney began his acting career with a minor role in the television miniseries Centennial. This miniseries, based on James A. Michener’s novel of the same name, was partially filmed in Clooney’s hometown of Augusta, Kentucky. Moving forward, Clooney’s breakthrough came in 1984 when he starred in the CBS sitcom E/R, not to be confused with the long-running medical drama ER.

However, it was his role as Dr. Doug Ross in the hit NBC medical drama ER from 1994 to 1999 that propelled Clooney to fame. Alongside Anthony Edwards, Julianna Margulies, and Noah Wyle, he garnered immense popularity. Even after leaving the series in 1999, Clooney made cameo appearances in the 6th season and returned for a guest spot in the show’s final season. His exceptional performance on ER earned him two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1995 and 1996. Additionally, he received three Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Actor – Television Series Drama in 1995, 1996, and 1997, narrowly losing to his co-star Anthony Edwards.

Following his departure from ER, Clooney ventured into the world of film and achieved commercial success. In 2000, he starred in Wolfgang Petersen’s disaster film The Perfect Storm, which performed well at the box office. The same year, he also appeared in the Coen brothers’ adventure comedy O Brother, Where Art Thou? alongside John Turturro, Tim Blake Nelson, and John Goodman. This film, a modern satire loosely based on Homer’s epic Greek poem the Odyssey and the 1941 classic film Sullivan’s Travels by Preston Sturges, is set in 1937 rural Mississippi during the Great Depression. Clooney portrayed the character of Ulysses Everett McGill, an escaped convict. His remarkable performance earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.

George Clooney is recognized as one of the most successful actors in terms of box office earnings, with a total gross of over $2.6 billion and an average of $61.7 million per film. He has been part of thirteen movies that have made over $200 million worldwide. Clooney’s career began with television series such as The Facts of Life (1985–1987), Roseanne (1988–1991), Bodies of Evidence (1992–1993), Sisters (1993–1994), and ER (1994–1999). He also took on low-budget film roles in the early stages of his career, including Grizzly II: Revenge (1983), Return to Horror High (1987), Combat Academy (1987), Return of the Killer Tomatoes (1988), Unbecoming Age (1992), and The Harvest (1993). His portrayal of doctor Doug Ross in ER earned him nominations for Golden Globe and Emmy Awards.

Clooney collaborated with director Steven Soderbergh in Ocean’s Eleven (2001) alongside a star-studded cast including Matt Damon and Brad Pitt. This was followed by sequels Ocean’s Twelve (2004) and Ocean’s Thirteen (2007). He has also been part of films like Solaris (2002), Welcome To Collinwood (2002), Intolerable Cruelty (2003), Syriana (2005), The Good German (2006), Michael Clayton (2007), Burn After Reading (2008), and Up in the Air (2009), which earned him an Academy Award nomination.

Apart from acting, Clooney has directed and starred in movies like Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002), Good Night, and Good Luck (2005), Leatherheads (2008), The Ides of March (2011), and The Midnight Sky (2020).
