Matt Damon, born on October 8, 1970, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S., is an American actor, screenwriter, and producer known for his handsome appearance and compelling performances. He achieved an Academy Award for best original screenplay for his work on Good Will Hunting (1997). Alongside his successful acting career, Damon delved into screenwriting, collaborating with his close friend Ben Affleck on the script for the same film.

Good Will Hunting, inspired by a one-act play Damon had written during his time at Harvard, revolves around a gifted yet troubled high-school dropout from Boston. Damon and Affleck convinced Miramax to allow them to star in the movie alongside the seasoned actor Robin Williams. The film received nine Oscar nominations, with Damon being nominated for best actor. In 1998, at the age of 27, he and Affleck clinched the Academy Award for best original screenplay.

Damon’s talent made him a sought-after actor, leading to appearances in several films in the late 1990s, such as Rounders (1998), Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan (1998), and Anthony Minghella’s The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999). Following a few box-office letdowns, Damon starred in two highly successful film franchises. He played a key role in the Ocean’s trilogy—Ocean’s Eleven (2001), Ocean’s Twelve (2004), and Ocean’s Thirteen (2007)—alongside George Clooney and Brad Pitt, under the direction of Steven Soderbergh.

In the Jason Bourne series—The Bourne Identity (2002), The Bourne Supremacy (2004), The Bourne Ultimatum (2007), and Jason Bourne (2016)—Damon portrayed a U.S.-trained assassin suffering from amnesia as he seeks to uncover his mysterious past. Apart from their commercial triumphs, the Bourne films were also lauded for their intelligence and fast-paced action.

Damon’s involvement in the early 21st century encompassed various roles. In Syriana (2005), he portrayed an energy analyst entangled in the dark side of the oil industry. Additionally, in Robert De Niro’s The Good Shepherd (2006), he depicted an agent compelled to sacrifice his family life during the formative years of the CIA. The year 2006 also saw Damon starring alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Jack Nicholson in The Departed, a crime thriller directed by Martin Scorsese that garnered an Academy Award for best picture.

He later assumed the role of an unreliable whistle-blower in The Informant! (2009), a comedy helmed by Soderbergh. Damon’s portrayal of the captain of the South African rugby team in Clint Eastwood’s Invictus (2009), urged by Nelson Mandela (played by Morgan Freeman) to win the 1995 World Cup and unite the racially divided country, earned him an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor.

in 2013, Damon ventured into television by taking on the role of a young lover to an aging Liberace (played by Michael Douglas) in Soderbergh’s biographical film Behind the Candelabra. Following this, he returned to the big screen with a series of science-fiction thrillers. In Elysium (2013), he portrayed an ex-convict fighting to escape a ravaged Earth. In The Zero Theorem (2013), directed by Terry Gilliam, he played the head of a corporation trying to prove the eventual collapse of the universe.

Damon also starred as a desperate space explorer in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar (2014).During this period, Damon also appeared in Ford v Ferrari (2019), directed by James Mangold, alongside Christian Bale. In The Monuments Men (2014), he portrayed a member of the MFAA unit, which tracked down art stolen by the Nazis during World War II. Damon earned his third Oscar nomination for acting in director Ridley Scott’s The Martian (2015), where he played an astronaut stranded on Mars.

After the less successful fantasy thriller The Great Wall (2016), Damon took on the role of a father with questionable motives in the dark comedy Suburbicon (2017). He also made cameo appearances in films like Deadpool 2 (2018). In 2021, Damon starred in the crime thriller Stillwater, portraying an American father who travels to France to uncover the truth after his daughter is accused of murder.

He also appeared in Scott’s The Last Duel, released in the same year, playing a medieval knight involved in a trial by combat. Damon co-wrote the script for The Last Duel with Nicole Holofcener and Affleck, who also appeared in the film. Damon and Affleck collaborated again on the sports drama Air (2023), with Affleck directing and Damon portraying a Nike executive pursuing an endorsement deal with a young Michael Jordan He portrayed U.S. General Leslie Groves, the head of the Manhattan Project, in Nolan’s epic historical film Oppenheimer (2023).
